What's inside: the Mission Brief, Junior, Teen and Expert Player Packs, ink-light black and white editions, the Host Guide with a 10-minute setup, the offline Game Master app, Tock's hints, Hint Cards, envelope labels and Party Extras.
Three steps: print one Player Pack for your level, shown with the Mission Brief; label four envelopes, one per room, from the Host Guide; then type answers into the offline app, shown with a real lock screen. Setup takes about 10 minutes.
The app checking Junior lock 7, The Four Clocks: code 3215 shows in red with not that one, check the page again, at 7 of 12 locks open; code 3251 shows in green with unlocked at 8 of 12. No answer envelope to spoil it.
The same Gear Train page at three levels: Junior for ages 8 to 11 in about 45 minutes, Teen for 12 and up and Expert for adults in about 60 minutes each. One story; each level has its own puzzles and answers, so you can play again.
Tock the owl's hint panel on a Teen lock: a nudge and a real hint are open, and the answer stays behind a Show the answer button. 108 hints, three for every lock at every level, and every hint is counted on the results screen.
Two results screens from the app: a Teen game escaped in 52:14 with 4 hints used and the time each lock opened, and a three-team race on one device with a leaderboard. The app runs the clock with a pause button and races 2 to 4 teams.
Two Host Guide pages: the flow of the game, where Envelopes 1, 2 and 3 open at once, then Envelope 4, the Machine Room, then lock 12, the Vault Door; and the six-step setup table, about 10 minutes, with notes on scissors work.
Three hands-on Junior puzzles: the Shredded Letter, cut into strips and rebuilt; the Punch Card, whose small rings are snipped out before it goes on the Card Reader Plate; and the Folding Blueprint. Scissors have just two jobs.
The Workshop Picture page from the Junior Player Pack in full color beside the ink-light black and white edition. Every Player Pack comes in both, in US Letter and A4 folders with identical pages. Print at 100 percent, actual size.
Party Extras as fillable PDFs, filled in with invented names: an invitation to The Inventor's Vault, team name badges and a Certificate of Escape. Type the details into the PDF, or print the pages and write by hand.
Print at home and play on any device: PDFs in US Letter and A4, in color and black and white, and the Game Master app, one file that works offline with no sign-up. On a computer, double-click it; on a phone or tablet, install it as an app.
A laptop shows the YouTube tutorial thumbnail for The Inventor's Vault with a play button and a YouTube seal, and pills for full voiceover, step by step and free on YouTube. Follow along from the printer to the vault.
Four questions answered. Too hard for a 9-year-old? Play Junior, for ages 8 to 11. Need internet? Not to play: the app runs offline once open or installed. Can the host play too? Yes, the app is the game master. Replay? New answers per level.
What you get: Junior, Teen and Expert Player Packs in color and black and white; the Host Guide and Hint Cards; the offline Game Master app with answer checking, a timer and hints; Party Extras; and a video tutorial. US Letter and A4.

A game night the 9-year-old and the grown-ups can play together, with no answer envelope waiting to spoil the ending.

  • One original, family-friendly story at three levels, each with its own puzzles and answers: Junior for ages 8 to 11 (about 45 minutes), Teen for 12 and up and Expert for adults (about 60)
  • 12 locks per level: three rooms in parallel, then the Machine Room, then the Vault Door, which uses your earlier answers
  • Eleven kinds of puzzle in every level: gears, a blueprint, a shredded letter, a symbol script, a logic grid, a word ladder, clocks, a star chart, a picture to search, a punch card laid over a plate and a fold-in
  • An offline Game Master app: answer checks that ignore capitals, spaces and punctuation, a progress map, a clock with a pause button, and a results screen with the escape time and hints used
  • 108 hints from Tock the owl, three for every lock at every level: a nudge, a hint, then the answer only when you ask, also printed on Hint Cards for play without the app
  • The ending stays locked inside the app until the final answer opens it, and the answers are stored only as scrambled codes, so nothing on the table spoils it
  • A team race for 2 to 4 teams on one device with a shared clock and a leaderboard, with notes for classrooms and bigger groups
  • Player Packs in color and an ink-light black-and-white edition, on US Letter and A4, with scissors used for just two jobs

Overview

One hour, one vault, your kitchen table: a printable escape room the 9-year-old and the grown-ups can play together.

A game night the 9-year-old and the grown-ups can play together, with no answer envelope waiting to spoil the ending.

Professor Hazel Sprocket has flown off in her hot-air balloon and locked her greatest invention in her vault, and your team has one hour to open it. The Inventor's Vault tells one story at three levels, 12 locks in each, and comes with a Game Master app that checks every answer offline, holds 108 hints, three for every lock, and keeps the ending locked until the final answer opens it. Scissors have just two jobs, the Shredded Letter and the Punch Card's rings, and setup takes about 10 minutes. Every level was solved start to finish in blind testing.

Key Benefits

Why this one

Three levels, one story

Junior is written for ages 8 to 11 with a grown-up nearby, Teen for 12 and up, and Expert for adults who like a twist in every room. Each level has its own answers, so a family can play again at the next level.

Nothing spoils the ending

There is no answer envelope. The app stores the answers only as scrambled codes and keeps the ending locked until the final answer opens it, so a peek inside the file spoils nothing.

Hints that do not give it away

Tock the owl gives a nudge, then a hint, then the answer only when you ask for it. Every hint is counted on the results screen, with an optional time penalty for a race.

Low cut, low ink

Scissors have exactly two jobs: cutting the Shredded Letter into strips (4 straight cuts at Junior, 5 at Teen, 8 at Expert) and cutting the small rings out of the Punch Card, which a grown-up does at Junior. No other page is cut or trimmed, and every Player Pack also comes in an ink-light black-and-white edition.

Everyone plays

The app is the game master, so the grown-up who sets it up can play too. 1 to 8 players a team, or a race for 2 to 4 teams on one device, and no internet needed to play.

Who It's For

Built for

  • A parent planning a family game night or a birthday party for kids 8 and up
  • A teacher or youth leader who wants teams racing with a shared clock
  • A party host who wants the grown-ups solving too, not reading from an answer key
  • Puzzle-loving adults who want the Expert level's twists

How It Works

Up and running in minutes

Print

Print one level's 14 page Player Pack per team, single-sided at 100%, in color or black and white.

Sort

Label four envelopes from the Host Guide and sort the pages by its print list: the Mission Brief stays on the table and the Vault Door page goes in Envelope 4. Setup takes about 10 minutes.

Play

Open the Game Master app on the same level, read the mission aloud and start the clock. Solve, cut, fold and type the answers; ask Tock when stuck.

Open the vault

Once locks 10 and 11 are open, the Vault Door wakes up. The right final answer plays the secret ending and a results screen with your escape time and hints used.

Why It's Different

Not another template

Many printable escape rooms come at one difficulty, check answers with an envelope or a web form, and hand the host the job of referee. The Inventor's Vault tells one story at three levels, each with its own puzzles and answers, so the same game fits a 9-year-old and a table of adults. Its Game Master app checks every answer offline, gives three-step hints, runs the clock and a team race, and keeps the ending locked until it is earned, so the grown-up can play too. Its scissors have just two jobs, every Player Pack comes in an ink-light edition, and every level was solved start to finish in blind testing.

Delivery & Compatibility

Instant, and it opens in what you already use

As soon as your order is complete you get instant access to download the ZIP: the Player Packs, Host Guide, Hint Cards and Party Extras on US Letter and A4, the Game Master app with its install card, a two page Quick-Start PDF and a START-HERE file. Start with the Quick-Start guide and the free video walkthrough. Nothing ships: you print at home.

One ZIP, instant download. Print the PDFs at home, single-sided at 100% (Actual size), on US Letter or A4. On a computer, double-click the Game Master app and it opens in your web browser with no internet needed. On a phone or tablet, install it once with INSTALL-AS-AN-APP.txt from the download and it runs offline after that; a file preview such as the iPhone Files app cannot run it. The Party Extras fill in Adobe Acrobat Reader and most browsers. No Canva and no account.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What format is this?

22 files in one ZIP: 18 PDFs (the Player Packs, Host Guide, Hint Cards and Party Extras, each on US Letter and on A4), the Game Master app as one HTML file, its install card, a quick-start PDF and a START-HERE file.

Is it too hard for my 9-year-old?

Play Junior. It is written for ages 8 to 11 with a grown-up nearby: short instructions, full keys and worked examples, and Tock's nudges help without giving the answer away.

Do we need internet?

Not to play. The app runs offline and never sends anything anywhere. Installing it on a phone or tablet uses a connection once.

Can the grown-up play too?

Yes. The app is the game master, so nobody has to sit out. Keep the Host Guide's HOST ONLY pages closed.

Can we play it again?

Yes. Each level has its own puzzles and answers: played Junior, try Teen; solved Teen, try Expert.

How many people can play?

1 to 8 players per team, or a race for 2 to 4 teams on one device. For more teams, run two devices, each with its own race.

The Inventor's Vault is family-friendly: no villains and nothing scary, and every name in the story is invented. It plays any time of year and is not a Christmas story. Every level was solved start to finish in blind testing; the playing times are targets for a team of 3 to 6, and nobody is locked out when time runs out. Print single-sided at 100% (Actual size): the Punch Card lines up with the Card Reader Plate only when both are printed the same way on the same paper, and both pages stay whole: only the small rings are cut out of the card. The printed Player Pack and the app level must match. The app saves a game only on the device that runs it. Digital product; because the files are delivered instantly, all sales are final.
