Getting started
How do I add a routine?
On the library screen tap Import, then From Photos or From Files. Counts copies the video into the app; the original stays where it is. Class videos, lesson recordings and screen recordings all work.
Is there something to try first?
Yes. The Sample Routine is always in your library: a four-eight beginner combo (box step, rock steps, side touch, turns) at 120 BPM, with its counts and sections already set. Every feature works on it, free.
Counts
How do I set the counts on my routine?
Open the routine and tap the count panel (or ⋯ › Counts and tempo). Press play and tap on the beat for eight beats or more, and Counts works out the tempo. Pause on the first step of the routine (the frame buttons help you land exactly) and tap Set the 1. Fine-tune with ±1 count, ±1 frame, the BPM buttons, or Half time / Double time if the counts feel twice too fast or too slow. Counts before the 1 are shown as the intro, counted "5, 6, 7, 8".
Can it show the "&"?
Yes: turn on Show "&" counts in Counts and tempo or in Settings.
Loops and speed
How do I loop part of the routine?
Tap a section chip under the controls. To make sections, tap Edit: add one by eights (for example "Turn 3–4"), split the routine into eights or pairs of eights, or add one by time. For a quick loop anywhere, tap Set A at the start and Set B at the end.
What is the lead-in?
Before each loop Counts counts you in, "5, 6, 7, 8", on the beat and at the loop's speed. Choose voice, clicks or both in Settings, or turn it off with the Lead-in button. Recording a take always counts you in.
Does slowing down change the music?
No. From 25% to 150% the music keeps its pitch, so the song still sounds like the song.
What is the speed ladder?
Turn on Ladder and pick a section: the loop plays at 50%, then 75%, then 100%, moving up every two loops. Change the steps in ⋯ › Speed ladder.
Can Counts say the counts while I dance?
Yes: Settings › Count along while playing › Voice or Clicks. Pick the voice in Settings › Count voice (more voices download in the iPhone Settings app under Accessibility › Spoken Content).
Camera and takes
How do I see myself beside the routine?
Tap Camera in a routine and allow camera access. Your mirrored live view appears beside the routine.
How do I record a take?
Pick a section (or start from an eight), then tap Record take. Counts counts you in, films one pass of the section and lines the take up with the routine. Your take opens in Review: the routine and your take play together, at the speed you choose, with a mirror switch for each side.
Where are my takes?
In the routine's Takes list. From Review you can Save to Photos, Share or delete a take. Counts records video only, never sound.
The camera says it isn't available.
Check Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera › Counts. The camera also pauses while another app is using it, and in Split View if the system doesn't let two apps share it; open Counts full screen.
Stand mode
What is Stand mode?
Tap Stand and the routine moves to the top half while the bottom half shows giant counts and four big buttons (Again, Play, Speed, Loop), easy to hit from arm's length with the phone propped up on a table.
Sound
I can't hear the music.
Counts plays sound even when the Ring/Silent switch is on silent. Turn up the volume with the side buttons, and check that Bluetooth headphones or a speaker aren't still connected.
